As Nigeria is marching
to towards May 29, 2015 when General Muhammadu Buhari will take the oath of
office as president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, one thing the General
must do for the youths is provision of employment. Even though he promised over
20 million jobs for the youths during his campaign, the wind of change must
blow as soon as possible in the direction of our next generation.
Nigeria cannot afford
to waste the next four years to experiment. Youths in this country have stayed
too long at the feet of lies. Youths in Nigeria have suffered neglect. Nothing seems
to be working. Rather what we have is kidnapping, armed robbery, pipeline
vandalism, human trafficking, prostitution and many more of social vices that
have brought the glory of the country into disrepute.
The president-elect,
Buhari needs to walk in the path of history, such that what the nation has
failed to achieved in the last 16 years can be achieved in 4 years.
One major trend in Nigeria
today, especially during elections, is the engagement of youths by some
politicians for political thuggery, rigging, stuffing of ballot boxes and other
related electoral offences. Most of the youths who are engaged in these crimes have
no means of livelihood or are school drop-outs. These youths are Nigerians who
ought to benefit from the enormous wealth and resources of the nation. Unfortunately,
this is not the case at the moment.
Indeed, it is the duty
of government, especially at the centre, to provide entrepreneurial skill acquisition
programme and start-up funds for small scale businesses to empower the youths. This
will reduce the chances of engagement of youths for wrong purposes.
